Carolina Perez is a composer, music producer, audio engineer, and sound designer whose work spans theatre, film, music, and multimedia production.

Born and raised in Cali, Colombia, she was immersed in music from an early age. She trained at the Instituto Departamental Bellas Artes from ages 5 to 15, studying classical and Latin American repertoire, singing in choirs, and playing classical guitar and piano. In 1999, she and her family immigrated to the United States, settling in Miami, FL, where she completed high school. In 2005, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Music Technology from Florida International University, studying opera, early music, jazz, and electroacoustic music.

In 2008, she earned an MFA in Sound Design from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, launching her work in theatre sound design and audio engineering. Returning to Miami, she expanded into film sound design, collaborating with local filmmakers, and taught music and audio production at Barry University, Miami Dade College, Broward College, and Miami International University of Art and Design. In 2010, she completed her first album, Sleep—a genre-blending work combining pop, rock, electronic, and orchestral elements with narrative-driven storytelling.

In 2017, she joined the faculty at UT Austin, where she taught music production and sound design and mentored students in music, theatre, dance, and multimedia installation projects. During this time, she also composed and designed sound for the play 12 Ophelias.

Since 2020, she has been an Assistant Professor of Music Technology at UNC Asheville, mentoring students in audio engineering and music production. Her most recent work includes The LeftEarlies, a play and audio drama for which she composed the music and designed the sound. She is currently finalizing a new rock EP with longtime collaborators from Miami and completing the composition of a deeply personal song cycle about the stillbirth of her daughter.
